Additional expenses to consider when budgeting:
Textbooks & Art Supplies: Students should estimate $50 per text per class. All students are required to purchase all the texbooks for the courses in which they are enrolled. Sharing of textbooks and reading materials is not allowed under any circumstances. When possible, the Institute will buy back textbooks at the end of the session for a percentage of their original cost. Students who take studio art courses (photography, painting, etc.) must purchase their own materials and supplies. See course descriptions for details.
Course Travel and Museum Visits: Because many courses at the Pantheon Institute include on-site visits, trips to museums, and other related excursions, these typically incur additional fees. Please look at the individual course descriptions for costs. Note: Field trips and on-site courses are mandatory; even if a student is for some reason unable to participate, course fees will not be refunded.
Italian Documents and Other: All semester students are required to submit a permesso di soggiorno permit-to-stay application. This is a legal document required by the Italian justice system; it is not optional. As of December 2006, the fee was approximately $150.00
Transportation: Although the program fees include transfers to and from the airport in Rome, they do not include everyday travel expenses. We recommend that students get a bus/metro pass for their daily travels, which will usually cost about $40 per month. There's also the option of buying tickets on an as-needed basis, and a single ticket costs approximately 1 euro.
Meals & Living Expenses: Living expenses can vary greatly from student to student depending on spending habits. Expenses such as local travel, eating out, social activities, and nightlife should all be taken into consideration. Past study abroad students have estimated that $30 per day is sufficient for everything - transportation, all activities, etc. (including optional tours). Students should use either travelers checks or automatic teller machines. ATMs are located throughout the city to easily obtain spending money regularly. Students should not carry large amounts of cash, and it is recommended that all participants bring a credit card in case of emergencies.
Optional Excursions: Each semester and summer session, the Pantheon Institute runs OPTIONAL day, overnight, and weekend trips throughout Italy. Traditionally two main trips are planned each semester: a Weekend in Tuscany/Chianti and a Capri/Pompeii Getaway weekend. In addition, two day trips to surrounding sites of historical interest are organized to nearby destinations like Tivoli, Ostia, and Castelli Romani. Students who wish to attend the optional field trips should consider the following:
Price for weekend trips: Varies – approximately $175-350 with meals and hotels
Price for day trips: Many are free, others cost approximately $35
