The Fall 2010 architecture and landscape architecture semester began at Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli and in Rome with the start of the Eighth Edition of the Piranesi Prix. This was an unparalleled opportunity for Pantheon Institute students to participate in one of Rome's most prestigious architecture workshops and prize, and interact with some of the most well-known and influential architects in the world.
This design workshop and competition is organized and directed by the dall’Accademia Adrianea di Architettura e Archeologia in collaboration with the Ministero per i Beni e le attività Culturali, the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici of Lazio, the Municipalities of Roma and Tivoli, and in partnership with the Politecnico di Milano, the Pantheon Institute of Rome and FIABA.
This two–week design workshop is made up of two museum design competitions: One is arranged for professionals operating in this field, the other is for upper level university students of architecture and related fields from European and North American schools.
On the first of September the professional prize was awarded, following the presentations of projects resulting from an international Call for Built Projects announced in April 2010 by the Accademia Adrianea. Internationally known architects participated and a selected number were invited to Rome for a two-day conference (31 August – 01 September) that was held in the auditorium of the Ara Pacis Museum. Issues surrounding the making of museums for archeological sites were presented and discussed.
The eighteen designers/architects who came to Rome, were selected in the first phase of the competition from among the thirty-three entries submitted for consideration. They were asked to make the presentations of their nominated projects to an audience of architects and students at the Ara Pacis. Among the architects were Guido Canali, Andrea Bruno, Gianni Bulian, Cerri Associati, Tortelli e Frassoni, Pietro Reali, Luigi Franciosini, Mandara e Longobardi, Pierluigi Grandinetti, and David Palterer from the Italians, and Gigo and Guyer (Switzerland), Vasquez Consuegra (Spain), Paredes and Pedrosa (Spain), Rafael Moneo (Spain), and Joao Luis Carrilho Da Graca (Portugal), from among the Europeans.
The three sessions of presentations, made to a packed house at the Ara Pacis, as evidenced by the high quality of the design work presented, represented the state of the art in the relationship between architecture and archaeology. In particular they addressed the issue of adding value to the archeological heritage while attesting to the autonomy of the design operation in a field that is unique and that requires great sensitivity and extensive cultural and technical preparation.
The jury for the professional competition, presided over by Angelo Torricelli and made up of Francesco Dal Co, Amedeo Schiattarella, Romolo Martemucci, Luca Basso Peressut, Lucio Altarelli, Luigi Spinelli, and Pier Federico Caliari, decided to award a prize for career achievement to the Spanish architect Rafael Moneo, designer in particular of the Museum of Roman Art at Merida (Spain, 1980-1985) and the Piranesi Prix de Rome Professional Prize to Portuguese architect Joao Luis Carrilho Da Graca for the musem at the archeological site of Praca Nova del Castello di Sao Jorge in Lisbon, built in 2008.
The announcement and the award ceremony were held on the 1st of September at the Casa Dell’Architettura Acquario Romano, the home of the Ordine degli Architetti of Rome. At the same time the exhibit of the International Call, that was designed and arranged by Pier Federico Caliari, Carola Genilini and the Accademia Adrianea, was inaugurated.
The first part of the ceremony was dedicated to the awarding of the prize for career achievements to Rafael Moneo, with a presentation by Francesco Dal Co,and with remarks by Angelo Torricelli, Luca Basso Peressut, Jose Maria Alvarez Martinez, Romolo Martemucci and Rafael Moneo himself.
Before the official opening of the exhibit, the award was made of the Piranesi Prix de Rome for 2010 to João Luís Carrilho Da Graça, the 58 year old Portuguese architect already winner of the 2008 Premio Pessoa.
